Before the Freeze

“A momentary distraction leads to tragic consequences, highlighting the fragile balance of motherhood and anxiety.”

“Before the Freeze” is a compelling 6-minute experimental psychodrama that delves into the struggles of Jo, a poet and mother navigating the challenges of postpartum anxiety amidst a painful divorce. When her friend Maria Lus visits to retrieve a forgotten tumbler, Jo becomes preoccupied with finding the water bottle, inadvertently leaving her two-year-old daughter Riley and their dog Rufus alone in the garden near dangerous insecticide. The tension escalates as Jo realizes her lapse in attention, racing back to discover the tragic outcome of Riley accidentally poisoning Rufus. This poignant narrative serves as a stark metaphor for the dangers of escapism and the overwhelming pressures of motherhood.

The original version of “Before the Freeze” captivates audiences with its experimental and electrifying audio design, which effectively mirrors Jo’s intense anxiety and psychological turmoil. Through its innovative soundscape, the film immerses viewers in Jo’s fragmented state of mind, enhancing the emotional depth of the story. Tenley E. Raj masterfully weaves together visuals and sound to create a haunting portrayal of personal struggle and responsibility. “Before the Freeze” not only tells a heart-wrenching story but also invites reflection on the universal themes of mental health and the complexities of balancing personal and parental responsibilities.
